2. General presentation of the study programme

The programme aims to prepare an architect able to critically combine contributions of humanistic and artistic culture with that of a technical-scientific nature. Such preparation responds in an adequate manner to the growing complexity of problems and new professional responsibilities required in a European and worldwide context.

The graduate is called upon to prepare projects and manage their implementation using specific architectural tools, having mastered construction feasibility of the conceived work and coordinating other specialists and operators in the fields of architecture, engineering, urbanistics and restoration.

In coherence with the directives of the European Union, the Programme promotes a figure of a cultured and aware architect able to combine knowledge with implementation know-how and therefore create design summaries at various levels with the contribution of a multiplicity of know-how and techniques.

3. Learning objectives

Qualifying objectives of the Programme are:

-ability to use knowledge to interpret phenomena and deal with complex architectural, town and land issues;

-knowledge of fundamental disciplines under their theoretical-scientific as well as methodological-operational aspects, in particular of Architectural Composition, Construction Technique and Architectural Technology, Urbanistic and Landscape Design, Restoration and Interior Architecture;

-ability to use such knowledge to identify, formulate and resolve, also in an innovative fashion, problems at the various scales of intervention;

- awareness of professional ethics.

The Master of Architecture (2 years after a Bachelor of Science  in Architectural Design) requires full time involvement and includes Courses, constituted by lectures and exercises, and Studio activities with compulsory attendance.

As specified in the teaching regulations, 120 credits are required to obtain the degree, more specifically; 76 credits are required for distinguishing courses (Architectural design, Technological Culture of Architecture, Energy systems for in-door comfort, Structural mechanics, Constructive systems, Urban design and restoration); for other activities electives 16 credits; 12 credits are required for professional practice, and final work

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

The educational programme, as in the Bachelor of Science in Architectural Design, is characterised around the central experience of the Architectural project in its theoretical and operational aspects. At the heart of the descriptive and interpretative work of the context is the concrete, material culture of manufactured products along with design work which deals with the mutated scenario of requirements and resources in an intense dialogue with values sedimented in contexts.

The study programme foresees maximum involvement of the student in Architectural Design Studios, activated in both the first and second Programme years. Alongside the experience of the Architectural Design Laboratories is that of the optional laboratory chosen from Urbanistic Design, Urban and landscape design, Restoration, Landscaping, Interior Architecture, Design of Constructed Systems, History Seminar and critique and representation of the architectural project.

The Master of Science is therefore aimed at going into more depth in the architectural project in the following areas of interest which have the centrality of the project and intervention on the physical environment in common:

- architectural project on various scales;

- preservation of architectural and landscape heritage project;

- urbanistic and landscaping project

- interior architecture project.

Expected results of understanding, expressed in European qualification Descriptors

Knowledge and understanding

The educational process is centred on the Studios (Architectural design, Urbanistics, Restoration, Interior Architecture and Landscaping) which, in continuity with, and reinforcing that done in the first study cycle, deal with the issue of the Architectural project, at various scales, in all its complexity and multi-disciplinarity. In the Studios, which are also the place in which the subject of the Graduation thesis is elaborated, the student acquires knowledge and ability of understanding which make him aware of experimental project work and able to express and apply original ideas in this area. In the learning process the student is in fact called upon to acquire advanced knowledge within the scope of the project disciplines and to use and supplement it during elaboration of the same.

The Studios experience, in which the various disciplines which contribute to formation of the Project are integrated, along with mono-disciplinary and integrated course, prepare the student in theory and practice in elaborating and formulating original ideas, also in a research context.

Teaching methods to achieve these objectives are lectures-exercises (in courses) and lectures-project revision (in Laboratories).

Applying knowledge and understanding

In the two-year Laboratory programme the student acquires, and is called upon to demonstrate at Graduation, design ability in complex and problematic contexts requiring non-standard and non-certified solutions but which rather imply search for innovatiion. The graduate will therefore be able to apply him/herself to new issues which arise with ability and originality.

Making judgements

The teaching structure of the Studios, based on project work and on continual discussion of the same, sees the student active, even more so than in the three-year Programme, in defining the project as an autonomous decision process.

Decisive in this sense are the evaluation methods:

-Concerning Courses: continuous tests in order to evaluate understanding of subject notions and final exam which always comprises a face-to-face interview with course professors in which the student must demonstrate his ability to summarise the knowledge acquired.

-concerning Laboratories: project reviews to evaluate acquired maturity and understanding of design issues and verify ability to gradually build the project, bearing in mind the points of view of the various subjects in terms of acquired know-how; final project presentation via appropriate communication and graphic representation methods; individual discussion of project results by the student in the presence of all Studios professors.

The graduate will therefore have developed, with the constant exercise described above, autonomy of judgement in his/her field of study as well as skills able to place him/her in a position to analyse and recognise critical issues in a proposed project and evaluate their ethical and social implications.

Communication skills

The graduate, thanks to constant critical project revision, constantly communicated and discussed between students and professors, will have acquired the communication ability which allows him/her to adequately transmit ideas and conclusions to various types of player.

Learning skills

Graduates, by practicing Architectural projects in the various areas and scales of application in the Laboratory, via in-depth analysis of the relations between disciplines contributing to their construction, develop the ability to autonomously manage their study programme and project research with a view to the profession of European Architect or to a third cycle of studies.

The student's learning ability is continuously exercised by discussing his/her seminar-laboratory activity as well as in discussion of the Graduation thesis which is constituted by a critical dissertation of an architectural project developed and analysed starting from the work of one of the course laboratories attended and concluded.

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)

5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The master degree in Architecture enables the graduate to operate as European Architect as well as being employed with high responsibilities by public or private institutions and bodies working on city and urban planning, construction and trasformation (institutions, public or private bodies and firms). A qualifying examination is required in order to obtain the enrolement in the professional register.

Recent legislation (pursuant to Presidential Decree 328/2001) has widened the scope of those who may become members of the Order of Architects, comprising, as well as Architects, landscaper, planners and conservationists.
In addition, the law has divided the Register into two sections, denominated A and B, section A is reserved for Masters and section B for Bachelors (only in architecture and planning).
Those registered in section A of the professional Register have the title of Architect.
In order to be registered in the professional Register as an Architect, the order foresees a Professional Exam to be taken at the end of the study Programme after graduation.
The Professional Exam foresees a practical test consisting of a one-day project, two written exams and an oral exam.. The Commission is chaired by a university professor appointed by the ministry and comprises professionals, public servants and university professors indicated by the professional orders and chosen by the Ministry.
For both sections A and B of the Order of Architects, the possibility to substitute the practical test with certified internship periods is being studied, to be carried out during the Programme of studies subject to the student having passed all his exams.

The Master Science in Architecture-Architectural Design enables the graduate to operate as a European Architect as well as being employed with significant responsibilities by public or private institutions and bodies working on city and urban planning, construction and trasformation (institutions, public or private bodies and firms). A qualifying examination is required in order to obtain enrolment in the professional register.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

Master of Science graduates may carry out all activities relating to a self-employed European Architect; furthermore, they may carry out functions of significant responsibility in institutions and public and private bodies (institutional bodies, public and private odies and companies, professional practices and design companie) working in the construction, transformation and town and land redevelopment fields.

7.5 Degree examination

The study programme is centred around students' commitment to Architectural Design Studios- activated both in the first and second course years - and in astudio of choice amongst Urbanistic design, Restoration, Interior Architecture, Construction System Design, Urban and landscape design, Landscape architecture, Architectural project critique and representation. All abovementioned laboratories, which are aimed at analysing the architectural project in various areas of interest, constitute graduation laboratories. The Master of Science thesis consists of a dissertation of an architectural project developed and analysed starting from the work of one of the course laboratories attended and concluded.

The project must be presented using adequate graphic documents and a written report containing critical reflections concerning the design experience of the course of studies.

Supervisors are professors responsible for the laboratories in which the project chosen for the thesis was carried out. Co-supervisors may be chosen amongst other professors of the School, both when requested with reason by students and when involved in laboratory teaching activity.

Information concerning general rules and regulations, session calendars, registration and consignment of theses is available at

9. Faculty

The names of professors for each Course, together with their subject, will be available on the degree programme starting from the month of September.
The degree programme is annually published on the website of Politecnico di Milano.

10. Infrastructures and laboratories

The Teaching Library of Durando Architecture (TLDA) was opened to the public in September 1997. It aimed to create an extensive collection to cover student, professor and researcher areas of interest. It houses the texts shown in the official teaching programme bibliographies and texts that allow further exploration of the subject contents linked to the problems of the architectural project and that document the progress made in design in Italy and abroad. In the reference section, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, codes and annals, historic treatises and regulatory texts may be freely consulted. An open bookcase of over 160 magazines which the library subscribes to since 1997 is available.

Library opening hours: 8.30 - 20.50 from Monday to Friday; 14.00-17.50 on Saturday

In addition to the lecture theatres for course and laboratory teaching, the School of Civil Architecture also uses:

- Lecture theatres with IT equipment in via Durando 10 and in via La Masa 34;

- Language Laboratory;

- IT Lab of the Architectural Design department in via Durando 10 that provides IT support to research and teaching activities for: elaboration of subject-oriented urban plans based on historical and archive databases; to scale graphic rendering of photogrammetric surveys; urban surveys for formulation of intervention and implementation plans; comparative analysis of typological and architectural schemes; acquisition, preparation and production of text, graphic and photographic page layouts for exhibitions and hypertexts and digital publishing.

In addition to the IT Laboratory on the school campus are also available:

- Modelling laboratory: plans and creates architectural models in various scales, from territorial to urban, construction, interiors and accessories, using multiple execution techniques, materials and finishes, relating to the various possible use of models, which range from verification of projects still in the analysis phase to final presentation of architectures or scaled construction of existing works;

- Macro town planning, mobility and, urban design laboratory: prepares reliable scenarios of macro-economic and macro-town planning transformations via instrumentation and statistical and cartographic calculations as well as simulations and evolutionary proportioning of transport systems. In addition, tackles complex project issues with quantification of project activities and urban re-design;

- Diagnostic Laboratory for building preservation and re-use: surveys level of decay and carries out diagnostics for projects concerning building preservation, management and re-use. In particular, studies the metric, static and materials consistency of buildings, identifies decay pathologies and corresponding causes and the most adequate graphic rendering to proceed with the subsequent conservation project.

- Photography Laboratory and Laboratory of the Light are also actived in the Campus.

Furthermore, on the via Durando 38/A campus, offers a consultancy service for the Piero Bottoni Archive, the most important document collection of the Politecnico di Milano, with over 90,000 exhibits (drawings, posters, models, furniture, objects, photographs, books, periodicals, booklets, etc.) concerning the works of Piero Bottoni, a prominent figure in twentieth century Italian architecture and town planning, as well as of other important architects including Le Corbusier and Terragni.

The consultancy service is extended also to Archive of Lombard Architects and EngineersAlbe e Lica Steiner Archive and Historic Archives of Politecnico di Milano

The School prints the annual" Student Guide" which contains a full overview of courses and services provided. Is also published with regularity the GIORNALE DELLA SCUOLA DI ARCHITETTURA CIVILE.

There is a printing centre in the school that takes care of the publication and sale of material.

Professors' lectures and publications may be consulted on the University web site at: www.arch2.polimi.it

11. International context

12. Internationalization

Within the scope of international exchange (EU and extra EU), students may spend a period of study abroad which normally has a duration of one semester, during the 1st year:

Selected students must agree a study track with the mobility promoter equivalent to the course of the foreign University up to a maximum of 80 CFU credits.

Within this limit the student may reiterate the experience abroad but only within the scope of international exchange programmes outside the EU. The tutor promoting the exchange will submit the credits and corresponding equivalence of Courses and Laboratories passed by the student abroad to the School Board for recognition.

LIFE LEARNING PROGRAMME (LLP) / ERASMUS - STUDENT STUDY MOBILITY

The LLP Programme, promoted by the European Union, allows European students enrolled in European universities taking part in a partnership programme to follow courses at foreign universities with the guarantee of recognition of courses and exams taken. This programme has the main objective of offering European students the possibility to study and live abroad as part of the daily life of the host country in order ot understand uses and customs.

The LLP programme affords students the possibility to  experience not only different cultures but also different traditions and teaching and project methods.

Students from outside the European Union may also take part as long as they have been resident in Italy for more than 5 years. Universities at which students may carry out a period of Erasmus exchange are those foreseen by Institutional agreements which the School of Building Architecture has stipulated with each partner campus. In the LLP announcement regarding destinations, the mobility promoters, professors which have created the exchange and which take care of coordinating exchange activities between our University and the foreign university are indicated.

The "coordinating" professor, on the other hand, is the person the student should refer to for defining his study curriculum for the study period spent abroad. Upon official confirmation from the European Union concerning our proposal for student mobility, each year, at the end of February, the School of Civil Architecture starts the selection procedure with the aim of preparing a ranking of students considered suitable for exchange with European universities.

The exchange is finalised with acceptance by the student of the assigned location and confirmation of acceptance by the partner, subject to control of the student profiles and forms sent by Exchange-Bovisa within the established deadlines.

LIFE LEARNING PROGRAMME (LLP) / ERASMUS - STUDENT MOBILITY FOR INTERNSHIPS

The LLP Programme allows students in higher education institutes which are holders of "extended EUC" to access internships in companies, education and research centres (excluding European institutions or organisations managing European programmes) present in one of the "Participating Countries" of the programme.

The student, which may receive an ad hoc community contribution for the internship period, has the opportunity to acquire specific skills and a better understanding of the host Country's social and economic culture with the support of preparation or refresher language courses of the host Country (or in the working language) with the final aim of facilitating mobility of young workers throughout Europe.

Before leaving, each student must have a work programme (Training Agreement) signed by the beneficiary, by the higher education institute and by the host organisation.

The internship period must be covered by a Placement Contract signed by the beneficiary and by the higher education institute or originating consortium.

For disabled students specific contributions are foreseen.
Furthermore, students bound for countries whose language is less used and taught have the possibility to participate in intensive language training courses (EILC - Erasmus Intensive Language Courses), useful for the subsequent Erasmus mobility period.

Interested students may apply at the Erasmus Office within the deadlines established in the specific announcements.
