2. General presentation of the study programme

Being conceived more than thirty years ago, the role of the management engineer has been perceived as an engineer of change and innovation. This role is similar to the classical engineer, being responsible of designing and managing systems, which complexity is due to the human element and the close interaction between technological, economic, organisational and financial variables. The management engineering course project was inspired by a new professional profile - the engineer-manager – that was translated into a clearly defined and consistent university curriculum. This programme has been continuously updated, modifying and improving the offered subjects, in order to meet the requirements of companies and other institutions where he/she will be employed and to retain the cutting-edge innovative knowledge associated with this professional profile.

About 14,000 management engineers have graduated from Politecnico di Milano since this degree course was introduced and the different paths they have followed demonstrate the appreciation of the labour market for this professional qualification.

Today, a management engineer faces a wide range of professional opportunities in many different sectors. Furthermore, over the years, the programme has acquired a large array of specializations to match market needs and changes dictated by technical progress, innovation and economic globalisation.

3. Learning objectives

An articulated study programme, with two complementary objectives, characterizes the Master of Science in Management Engineering. On the one hand, the study programme aims at developing - through a common body of knowledge, methods and procedures – a unitary professional profile. On the other hand, it aims at training qualified professionals with a range of skills able to satisfy the requirements coming from different companies and institutions where management engineers will work, both in traditional and innovative fields.

The study programme conveys a solid knowledge in the use of modelling and problem solving, based upon rigorous quantitative and qualitative methodologies, using interactive teaching, with work groups and presentations by highly qualified experts from the fields of industry, services, finance and consultancy. Furthermore, the course provides continuous updates in methods and case studies to supplement the various modules.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

First cycle degree (level 6 EQF) or comparable qualification

The admission to the Master of Science degree undergoes an evaluation process aimed to determine the eligibility of the applicant.

Such process, in compliance to the existing regulation (D.M. 22/10/2004 n. 270 art. 6 par. 2 and D.M. 16/3/2007, art.6 par. 1), is based upon curriculum requirements and an assessment of the preparation of the student.

The final decision about the admission to the Master of Science degree shall be taken by an Evaluation Commission set up for this purpose by the School Council which – if no valid documentation showing clear exceptional conditions which justifies non-compliance of the mentioned criteria and showing that the student has an adequate preparation for the degree is submitted - will analyze the case according to the academic career of the applicant. The documentation showing the existence of clear exceptional conditions shall be submitted attached to a request to the Dean of the School.

If the applicant is admitted, any potential compulsory subject to be chosen in the curricula and/or potential additional subjects shall be communicated for each curriculum together with the admission and before enrolment, in order to provide students with the necessary information for a transparent and rational choice.

Students with a Bachelor of Science in Logistic and Production Engineering (at Politecnico di Milano), which is deemed correspondent to the Management Engineering Bachelor of Science – applicative course, who are interested in enrolling to the Master of Science, should contact the Commission that evaluates all applications.

Requirements concerning the English language proficiency levels are presented in Paragraph 7.3.

6.1.1 Application for admission while studying for a Bachelor in Science degree or after obtaining a Bachelor in Science degree

Admission requirements necessary for the evaluation of the career are as follows:

  • students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science degree at Politecnico di Milano are required to be enrolled to the Graduation session;
  • students enrolled in Bachelor of Science degrees in other Universities are required to graduate before enrolling to the Master of Science (Laurea Magistrale);
  • or, everyone is required to hold a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Admission requirements concerning the academic career considered by the Commission are as follows:

  1. graduation at the Bachelor of Science in no more than four academic years from initial enrolment, i.e. before April 30 of the fifth year after the first enrolment (for example if the first enrolment was September 2013, the degree should be obtained before April 30 2018); such requirement does not apply for candidates having a MSc or a degree earned under the old Teaching Regulation;
  2. graduation mark not below the “adjusted” admission threshold (please see Paragraph 6.1.1.2);
  3. certification of the English language proficiency (please see Paragraph 7.3);
  4. having qualifications which do not require any further prerequisites.

If the requirements stated at either point 1) or 2) of the above list are not satisfied, the applicant will not be admitted to the Master of Science degree course, unless documentation testifying a proven exceptional case can be presented. If the requirements stated at either point 3) or 4) of the above list are not satisfied, the applicant will be accepted to the Master of Science degree course and enrolled, after having satisfied these conditions, by demonstrating his/her proficiency in English and/or obtaining the necessary prerequisites identified by the Commission and communicated to the applicant.

6.1.1.1 Award of the Bachelor of Science in maximum 4 academic years

The academic curriculum ends when all 180 credits of the Bachelor of Science have been awarded, including the final work, the language exam and, when requested, the curriculum-based in-company training period.

When evaluating this four-year limit for the achievement of a Bachelor of Science, the School calculates all the academic years required for the academic curriculum. Only for the 2016-2017 academic year, in the case of students having a Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering, who did a change in their study programme, the Evaluating Commission may consider two less restrictive conditions:

  • the number of credits (ECTS) earned during the Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering is at least equal to 21 on a semestral basis or 42 on an annual basis, and
  • the applicant has at least 120 credits earned in the programme of Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering.

This exception will be no more applicable from the 2017-2018 academic year.

6.1.1.2 "Adjusted" admission threshold

Students who earned their Bachelor of Science degree with a score lower than the “adjusted” admission threshold will not be admitted to attend to the Master of Science in Management Engineering.

For the 2016-2017 academic year, the “adjusted” threshold is calculated by summing up the final degree score with a bonus linked to the time in which the student graduated:

  • 3/110 for students who apply for enrolment after finishing the Bachelor of Science in due time (i.e. students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2013 and will earn their BSc degree no later than September 2016)
  • 2/110 for students who will graduate one semester later (i.e. students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2013 and will earn their BSc degree no later than February 2017)
  • 1/110 for students who will graduate two semesters later (i.e. students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2012 and will earn their BSc degree no later than September 2016).

6.1.1.3 English Proficiency

For a list of the recognised certificates and their respective minimum requirements, please see Paragraph 7.3.

6.1.1.4 Admission without prerequisites

An applicant can be admitted to the Master of Science in Management Engineering when his/her Bachelor of Science degree programme is evaluated as being “consistent” with the study programme of the Master of Science degree course. These requirements are verified by the Evaluation Commission, which also ascertains the need of imposing any prerequisite (i.e. additional compulsory modules) to fill possible gaps.

Please see Paragraph 6.2, for a presentation of the evaluation process.

6.2 Requested knowledge

In order to be accepted to the Master of Science in Management Engineering, applicants must have acquired a knowledge base that is consistent with the study programme offered in the degree course. The evaluation of the adequacy of this knowledge base uses as a reference framework the programme of the Bachelor of Science degree course in Management Engineering, with the “introductory course” orientation (“propedeutico”). This means that any prerequisite that is required to prospect students derives either from a lack of “consistency” with the applicant’s Bachelor of Science degree course or from the differences between the two options, “introductory” (“propedeutico”) orientation and “applicative ” (“applicativo”) orientation (or equivalent), within the Bachelor of Science course. “Applicative” courses usually contribute less credits for the modules taken during the Bachelor of Science degree course. For instance, all the courses with a number of credits higher than 10 achieved through stages, final test, language proficiency are considered applicative.

Because of the wide and varied background of the graduates applying for a Master in Science degree, it is only possible to define beforehand the admission requirements for the majority of cases and in particular for graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. In all other cases, applicants must sit a purpose specific examination on the curricula in order to ensure that only applicants having the necessary requirements of “consistency” with the study programme of the Master of Science degree are admitted, and possible gaps are integrated through prerequisites and course restrictions.

Any prerequisites communicated by the Commission to the applicant during the assessment of his/her application must be completed before applying for matriculation to the Master of Science degree course. The relative procedures are presented in the Paragraph 6.2.1.

On the base of the criteria previously expressed, conditions for admission to the Master of Science degree course for students coming from different backgrounds are stated below:

  • Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano ("introductory” orientation)
    No prerequisites are required. There are no course restrictions.

  • Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano ("applicative” orientation)
    A prerequisite 10 credits is required, to be attained according to the procedures indicated in Paragraph 6.2.1. There are no course restrictions.

    It is a necessary condition that the applicant must have satisfied this prerequisite before he/she can proceed to his/her application for matriculation in the Master of Science degree course. Matriculation will be assured only if all the requirements defined by the Teaching Regulation are met.
    The required 10 credits are defined by the Evaluation Commission drawing from a list of courses which are differential between the “Introductory” (Propedeutico) orientation and “Applicative” (Applicativo) orientation of the Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering. Within maximum 5 days after the publication of the outcomes of the evaluation process, students have the possibility to ask for changes in the modules assigned for their academic integration. For asking this, students must send a written communication, explaining why they request the change.

6.2.1 Procedures for the application of prerequisites

An applicant who has been assigned any prerequisites may attend individual courses, in the period before the enrolment to the Master of Science. The following three opportunities exist:

  • B1) earn credits by passing courses at the Master of Science level (individual courses); these “early” credits can be used towards the 120 credits necessary for the Master of Science degree.
  • B2) earn the attendance of courses at the Master of Science level. As per B1, but without passing the exam.
  • B3) earn credits related to additional compulsory modules as requested by the Evaluation Commission for the Master of Science These credits cannot be accounted under the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree.

Furthermore, the following restrictions are in force:

  1. the total amount of credits (by passing exams or only attending courses) that can be accounted under the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree (B1+B2) cannot exceed 32. Credits in excess of 32 could be only considered as overnumber (soprannumero).
  2. in any case, the total amount of credits earned by passing “individual courses” cannot exceed 80, including credits earned under B3.

If an applicant does not complete any prerequisites imposed and communicated to him/her by the Evaluation Commission within 15 months, he or she forfeits his/her right to admission totally and completely.

6.2.2 Course restrictions (compulsory modules and exclusions)

With the exception of graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, all applicants admitted to the Master of Science degree course – including those who were required some prerequisites - will be assessed to verify whether they have already taken certain specific modules (or the equivalent) within the Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. If the applicant has not taken any of these modules, he or she must take compulsory modules within the three areas of Economics, Industrial Engineering and Management as defined as follows.

For graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering from other Italian universities, Evaluation Commission will verify the need of imposing some restrictions aimed to fill possible gaps in economic disciplines.

For graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering other than Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano or any other Italian University, the Evaluation Commission will verify the need of imposing some restrictions aimed to fill possible gaps in economic disciplines.

For graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, information technologies, physical and mathematical disciplines, the Evaluation Commission will verify the opportunity of a different articulation of the first year course in order to fill possible gaps in technical-engineering, mathematical and statistical disciplines.

Finally, for graduates who gained a Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline other than those specified previously the Commission reserves the right to apply further obligations and/or exclusions, depending on the peculiarities of the studies they carried out during their undergraduate degree course.

6.2.3 Other aspects

For any other aspects regarding admission conditions not otherwise covered in this Teaching Regulation, the applicant should contact the Evaluation Commission by e-mail (management-engineering-admissions@polimi.it), who will make the ultimate decision.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

As specified in the didactic regulations, 120 credits are required to obtain the degree. For more information about the specific disciplines of LM/31 visit http://www.cun.it/media/77608/lauree_magistrali.pdf.

The Master of Science in Management Engineering has been designed in a unitary fashion and the various tracks share a course platform which provides identity to the Degree Programme and constitutes its foundations. Such courses cover three main disciplinary areas:
  1. applied economics,
  2. industrial engineering,
  3. management.

In addition, there are other modules more methodology and technology related in nature, as well as further complementary modules. Each student may organize these disciplines according to different proportions and specific issues, according to the preferred type of professional figure, critical skills and educational objectives. Since not all the possible combinations of the courses are equally effective, there are nine pre approved Tracks of courses. The choice of one of these Tracks implies its automatic approval, otherwise a suitable Commission of the CCS will evaluate the adequacy of the proposed Track of courses. Until the approval of the Track, it will Tracks be possible to take any exam since the track is subject to modifications.

7.2 Mode of study

This Course requires a full time attendance and involves classroom and laboratory activities

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

The following pages describe the preventively approved study plans.

In consideration of the wide range of courses offered for the Master of Science, study plans proposed by the students and constructed in an autonomous way can be exceptionally accepted only in presence of strong motivations. Such a restriction can be overcome only if:

  • a study plan became autonomous as a consequence of the prescriptions fixed by the Evaluation Committee at the time of admission to the Master programme;
  • the autonomous study plan has been submitted in order to participate to international exchange programmes, and it has been approved for it.
