2. General presentation of the study programme
The BSc program in Industrial Production Engineering deals with all aspects of industrial production, a process which is analysed from the point of view of the complex systems management. The training covers therefore different topics including the basics of industrial product design, the management and optimisation of the production process, production technologies, logistics etc.
The Industrial Production Engineer is an engineer who sees industry as a complex system to be designed, organised and managed. He/she therefore has the necessary skills to dominate such a system from its initial design phase through to its management, in the meantime optimising its processes, technological cycles, systems, plants, logistics, and so on.
The Industrial Production Engineer has a broad culture and the ability, where necessary, to develop his/her knowledge and become an expert in a specific field, possessing the necessary methods and cultural tools to autonomously go into detail in any branch of industrial/management engineering. Furthermore, the Industrial Production Engineer is able to find in others the necessary specific skills, coordinating and planning the various activities of a team. He/she therefore has the ability to work in a team and thanks to his broad skills he can fruitful cooperate with experts of various branches.
The figure of the Industrial Production Engineer is akin to that of the Industrial Engineer, widespread in Europe since many years and even more in the United States, and undoubtedly successful.
3. Learning objectives
The BSc program in Industrial Production Engineering aims to provide an appropriate background, in scientific subjects including mathematics, calculus and physics, and a sound knowledge of the basics of mechanical engineering subjects (applied mechanics, mechanical design, materials etc.) and of management engineering (economy, enterprise management, ...).
The specific subjects for this program concern the design and management of industrial plants and all mechanical production technologies.
The Degree program in Industrial Production Engineering prepares an engineer able to carry out design and management tasks in manufacturing and process industries. The teaching track is designed to guarantee a solid scientific, economic and technical background allowing an easy acquisition of further knowledge which might become necessary in order to carry out the professional role.
The Industrial Production Engineer has to deal with product manufacturing processes, design and dimensioning of production means, of technologies and transformation plant and related services, as well as general operation and management of a production system. To do that he must also possess, in addition to specific skills, a solid background in micro-economics (in particular with regard to product and labor costs) and work organization, as well as in disciplines related to mechanical engineering.
The specific skills are those related to disciplines concerning industrial plant and manufacturing technologies and systems, that is the design and supervision of integrated production systems, industrial quality management, design of technological processes, design of production systems, general plant services, maintenance management, industrial technologies, ergo-technologies and issues of safety and the environment.
To those extents, three different learning objectives have been identified:
- understand the main fundamentals of engineering and their implementation in the different production technologies and processes;
- learn about the context variables, functions and fundamental processes in mechanical and industrial processes;
- design engineer and manage production models and systems through the lens of a scientific rigorous approach, in a business setting.
The course is characterized by a strong relationship with the entrepreneurial local environment.
4. Organization of the study programme and further studies
4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications
The Industrial Production Engineering Bachelor Degree lasts three years and is worth 180 ECTS credits. The first and second years are common for all students. The third year conversely differentiates according to the choice of programme (oriented to the preparation for a Masters Degree course or for the direct access to the job market). Two curricula are available for students oriented to access a Master degree course in Mechanical Engineering or Management respectively. The first two years aim to provide students with a solid cultural background that brings together typical engineering knowledge with that of the industrial engineer. The third year, thanks to the possibility of choosing a number of courses, allows students to complete their framework of skills by creating different tracks based on individual student choices. The qualification at the end of the programme is that of an "Industrial Production Engineer".

4.2 Further Studies
The qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)
The Bachelor Degree qualification in Industrial Production Engineering gives access to the Master of Science, with the limitations established by law and by the regulations approved by each individual University.
In particular, this qualification permits access to Master of Science programmes in Management Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, which constitute the natural progression of the Bachelor of Science. The Master of Science in Management Engineering is run by the Politecnico di Milano on the Milan Bovisa campus (international class), whilst the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering is run by the Politecnico di Milano on the Milan Bovisa, and Lecco campuses (international classes).
Since this academic year, a double degree program, internal to Politecnico di Milano, has been activated for the double Master in Mechanical and Management engineering. This is an initiative bringing to the level of the Master degree the idea of combining knowledge in the field of mechanical and management engineering at the base of the bachelor in Industrial Production Engineering. The double degree program is based on a 180 CFU path that eventually leads to the achievement of both master degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Management Engineering
Bachelor of Science students interested in more or less closely related Master of Science programmes are therefore invited to consult the corresponding Regulations in good time in order to avoid - by appropriately choosing their courses and/or including additional exams in their curriculum- any subsequent requests of curricular supplements to satisfy admission requirements.
5. Professional opportunities and work market
5.1 Professional status of the degree
The Industrial Production engineer owns the competencies needed to design, organise and manage an industrial system considered in its complexity. He/she owns then the appropriate skills needed to manage such a system in terms of product concept, design and management of the production system, process optimisation, management of technological processes, systems, plants, logistics. The Industrial Production is hence particularly well prepared and suited to be entrusted with design and management roles in manufactory and process industries
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Production Engineering belongs to Class L/9 (Industrial Engineering) of the current Ministerial tables. The programme prepares for the following professions:
- Mechanical Engineer
- Management and production Engineer
Industrial Production Engineering graduates can, if they are interested, take the ‘Professional Exam’ (Esame di Stato), a state-run, professional qualification examination, enabling them to enrol under Section B (Junior Engineers) of 'Industrial Engineering' sector.
5.2 Careers options and profiles
Students having earned a BSc in Industrial Production Engineering find job opportunities in all fields related with the design and management of industrial plants and production systems.
The Industrial Production Engineer has ample possibilities to express his/her professional activity in various industrial sectors. Typical opportunities are offered in industry (not necessarily mechanical and manufacturing) concerning production, development of new technologies, operation of plant and machinery, planning and supervision of production activity and ensuring compliance of transformation and service plant with quality and environmental standards.
He/she sees industry as a complex system to be designed, organised and managed. He/she therefore has the necessary skills to dominate such a system from its initial design phase through to its management, in the meantime optimising its processes, technological cycles, systems, plant, logistics, and so on. In addition, has a cultural background which, together with specific skills, is conducive to management and technical/commercial roles (mainly in manufacturing industries), to manage complex projects and dominate methods and cultural tools required to autonomously go into detail in any branch of engineering. The 12 laboratory credits, 17 stage credits and final exam provide an excellent link with the employment world and a warrant of rapid insertion in the industrial environment for those choosing the curriculum oriented to Professional preparation. For those intending to continue their studies, it is possible to access the Master of Science in Management and Production Engineering or Mechanical Engineering by appropriately choosing three exams in the third preparatory year.
The last survey about the employment situation of graduates has evidenced that 75% of the graduated follow an MSc course, the remaining are all occupied (100%). The mean time from graduation to their first job for the graduated in Industrial Production Engineering has been less than 2 months.

The Industrial Production Engineer is an engineer who sees industry as a complex system to design, organize and manage. Therefore, s/he has the necessary skills to define this system from the first design stages, and achieve management, through the process optimization, technological cycles, systems, plants, logistics, etc.
S/he is a profile characterized by a high cultural transversal nature, that possesses the ability, where necessary, to develop his/her knowledge and become an expert of a specific field, given that s/he possesses the method and the cultural tools necessary to independently understand in detail any specific sector of industrial/management engineering. In addition, the Industrial Production engineer is able to find the necessary specific skills, by coordinating and planning the individual activities of a team. Therefore, s/he is able to work in group with a wide range of skills that allow him/her to "talk" with the experts of the different sectors.

The Industrial Production engineer has many opportunities concerning his/her professional activity in different industrial sectors. Traditional opportunities are related to industries (not necessarily mechanical or manufacturing ones) of production, development of new technologies, management of machineries and plants, planning and supervision of production activities and assurance of compliance with quality and environmental standards by the processing and service plants.
S/he also has a cultural background that, combined with technological skills, allows him/her to carry out managerial and technical-commercial works (mainly for manufacturing industries), to manage the progress of complex projects and to have the right knowledge of methods and cultural tools necessary to deeply understand in complete autonomy any sector related to engineering.
The 14 educational credits of laboratories and the 17 credits of Internship and final exam provide an excellent connection with the world of work, and they can be seen as a guarantee of fast integration into the company, for those who choose the applicative field. For those who want to continue their studies, it is possible to access without any educational debits to the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) study programme in Management Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, by appropriate choice of three exams in the third preparatory year.
The 2011 employment survey of 2011 graduate students, carried out in February 2012, showed that 73% of graduate students continue their studies with a Laurea Magistrale study programme, the remaining part enters the world of work. All graduate students who had not continued their studies were employed at the time of the survey and the average waiting time to find the first job was 34 days from the graduation date.
The Laurea Study Programme in Industrial Production Engineering is characterized by a very close relationship with companies and the production world.
6.1 Access requirements
Secondary school leaving qualification, or foreign comparable qualifications
For admission to the Industrial Production Engineering Bachelor degree, a test, common to all Politecnico di Milano Engineering Bachelor degrees, must be taken to ascertain students’ aptitude and preparation for studies.
Students who are already enrolled on other degree programmes or at other Universities and wish to transfer to the Industrial Production Engineering Programme can request acknowledgement of any ECTS credit they have already earned
6.2 Requested knowledgeThe educational offer at the Politecnico di Milano
Candidate students having successfully passed the TOL before the end of July can subscribe without limitations. For students applying after the September TOL the subscription acceptance is conditioned to the availability of places that, for this year, are limited to 120, seven of which are reserved to non-EU students. The score achieved in the TOL gives priority in case the request of inscription exceeded the available places. More information can be found on the dedicated section of the web site.
How to become a student at Politecnico di Milano
6.4 Tutoring and students support
The "Tutoring" service has the objective of assisting students during their studies, especially in the first years. This activity involves student-tutors and professor-tutors. The student-tutors provide students with information on the practical organisation of studies and on the support system offered by the Politecnico. Furthermore, they help students needing to fill basic gaps (for example, students with compulsory supplementary education assigned from TOL). Student tutor activity is carried out through meetings during the appointment time slots or via e-mail. The service is organised as part of the Programme to which students should refer for all necessary information about finding tutors and the services provided.
Moreover, the tutoring service provides professors, on request, with PhD student tutors to support students in laboratory activities, to provide additional support to foreign students or to organise teaching material provided by professors.
7. Contents of the study Program
7.1 Programme requirements
As specified in the didactic regulations, 180 credits are required to obtain the degree (first level). More specifically, at least 45 credits are required for basic courses (mathematics, computer science, physics), 64 credits at least for distinguishing courses; 20 credits at least for related courses. The final stage, 17 credits, is reserved to those students who choose the applicative third year.

7.3 Detailed learning objectives
The two curricula setup for the direct access to the MSc in Mechanical Engineering and Management Engineering allows to directly enrolling in these two courses, which are the natural paths for the further knowledge development of an Industrial Production Engineer.
The curriculum for Professional preparation, has been created for those oriented to direct employment after the BSc. A relevant role in this curriculum is played by laboratory courses with mostly applicative contents. Moreover, a training period within an industry is a fundamental element of the path. The student during this experience applies to the real problems of the industry the methods and knowledge acquired during the previous courses, guided by two Tutors, one from the firm and the other from the Politecnico

Individual Study Tracks
Any individual study track will be accepted under exceptional circumstances only for good reasons, subject to Educational System constraints.
Exceptions to this limitation are made for:
- students whose study tracks have actually become “individual” following changes made to the Programme Academic rules ;
-Bachelor Degree students who submit individual study tracks in order to participate in international exchange programmes.
Any examinations passed before enrolling in the Master of Science programme (M.Sc.)
During the Bachelor degree, students can, in the interests of future admission onto a Master of Science programme:
A1) earn ECTS credits by passing extra M.Sc. examinations, included in their personal study tracks and considered “advance” credits that can be acknowledged as part of the 120 credits needed to be awarded an M.Sc.
A2) acquire attendance status in M.sc. modules. As 1) but without passing the examination that, as a result of acquiring attendance status, can be taken in advance.
A3) Earn ECTS credits for track integrations established by an ad hoc Bachelor of Science admissions Board; these ECTS credits are “in addition” to the 120 needed to be awarded the Bachelor of Science.
In the period between awarding of the Bachelor Degree and enrolment on the M.Sc., in the interests of the latter, it is possible to:
B1) earn ECTS credits from successful M.Sc. examinations by enrolling on M.Sc. modules as individual modules. These are considered “advance” credits that can be acknowledged as part of the 120 credits needed to be awarded an M.Sc.
B2) acquire attendance status in M.Sc. modules As 1) but without passing the examination.
B3) Earn ECTS credits for track integrations established by an ad hoc Bachelor of Science admissions Board; these ECTS credits are “in addition” to the 120 needed to be awarded the Bachelor of Science.
The following limitations are to be taken into consideration:
1. the total number of ECTS credits (by passing examinations and/or by acquiring attendance status) that can be acknowledged as part of the 120 ECTS credits needed to be awarded the M.Sc. (A1+A2+B1+B2) is limited to 32. Thus any additional ECTS credits earned exceeding 32 will not be taken into account.
2. in any case the total amount of ECTS credits earned by passing “individual courses” cannot exceed 80, including ECTS credits earned under A3 +B3.

7.5 Degree examination

The final examination is worth 3 ECTS credits. The final examination score is not calculated as part of the average score but is used to increase the overall Bachelor degree score. The maximum increase is normally up to 7/110 which can be raised to 8/110 in case of 'excellence' recognised by a specifically constituted Board.
For students of Mechanical Engineering M.Sc. preparatory track, final exams consists of the preparation, presentation and discussion of a report on a specific activity carried out autonomously by the student and assigned within one of the last year courses. For the Management Engineering M.Sc. preparatory track the participation in a 'business game', i.e. a competition based on simulating a company environment, held annually in the second semester, is foreseen. The final examination for students on the Professional preparation track is linked to the internship. It will consist of a critical report on the specific project to which the student has contributed during his internship that will be presented to the appointed board.

10. Infrastructures and laboratories
The BSc program in Industrial Production Engineering is hosted in the new Lecco’s Campus, inaugurated in 2013. The Campus includes teaching spaces and research laboratories along with the student’s housings. Teaching takes place in modern and functional buildings equipped with computer and experimental laboratories offering support of teaching activities. In particular, the laboratory of mechanical and thermal measurements is set up with ten identical working benches each of them equipped with the basic instrumentation. This allows students to carryout individually or in small groups, static and dynamic calibrations of displacement transducers, thermometers, accelerometers and basic measurements of mechanical and thermal quantities. Laboratory activities enable the students to gain the knowledge to design experimental set-ups, properly plan and mange the tests, analyze the data and create test reports. Beside the didactic laboratory research laboratories working in the fields of hydraulics, physics, material science, metrology are present and allows student to make specific experiences in the various courses.

This BSc program takes as a reference similar BSc programs in Industrial Engineering and Production Engineering, available in several universities across the EC and the United State
The Degree programme in Industrial Production Engineering provides a programme which some European (for example Cambridge, Chalmers, ETH) and American (Georgia Tech, Purdue) universities of excellence already offer and which combines technical preparation (in particular manufacturing) with economic, organisational and management system skills.
The Degree programme in Industrial Production Engineering takes place in an international context with the presence on the same campus of a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in English with a strong presence of students from all over the world. Similarly, on the Como campus, there is a track of the Master of Science in Management and Production Engineering, held entirely in English with significant presence of students from all over the world. Students of the Industrial Production Engineering degree programme may access without any penalisation (debits) these Master of Science programmes. In the Industrial Production Engineering degree programme, international exchanges and international student mobility are encouraged.
During their academic career, students have the possibility (with prior approval of the Programme Board - CCS) to take exams at foreign Universities which will be recognised as equivalent to those available at Politecnico with similar contents.
